Last December, my 12-year-old black Lab mix, Cairo, died very suddenly from an especially fast-moving cancer. To be honest, a year later I’m still missing him terribly, which is why I’m happy to have Grief Counselor Bonnie Goodman join us for Tuesday’s show. An experienced human and pet grief counselor, Bonnie will talk about the symptoms of bereavement and strategies for coping with the loss of a pet, as well we why we so often feel shame or guilt for grieving for our pets.

Bonnie is board certified in thanatology by the Association for Death Education and Counseling, a certification that demonstrates one’s expertise and involvement in the field of death, dying and bereavement, and she is a member of The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement and The American Academy of Bereavement.

I think this will be an exceptionally good show for all of us who have lost–or will soon lose–someone we love, human or otherwise. Join us Tuesday at 1pm Pacific on PDX.FM.

On Tuesday at 11am, our Internet radio show, Special Pets, Special Needs, will debut on Small Plate Radio, and you can tune in by simply going to http://scoutshouse.sprnetwork.com and clicking on the icon in the upper right that says “click here to listen live at showtime.” And yes, it says the show is live, but this one was actually pre-recorded on Friday (Krista is very pregnant and due to go into labor any day now, so we had to tape it before she delivered). But subsequent shows will be live and you can IM us on those.
   As the name implies, the show is all about special needs pets–the challenges they face, help in understanding how to deal with those challenges, and interviews with some of the top veterinarians, researchers, and specialists around. This first episode is about how to modify your home environment to accommodate a pet’s disabilities with lots of good information that only Krista can provide. And if you can’t listen to this one at 11am, you can listen to it later by going to the same address OR you can download it from iTunes (just search for Special Pets, Special Needs) OR even subscribe to it on iTunes.
